Sepia Saturday 291

This week I'm lucky to be with Sepia Saturday project again! Rare luck to find picture matching the theme announced so quickly and easily. And the theme is Television/Shops/Furniture. Let's travel in time back to 1968! My father's aunt Nadya and her husband owned wonderful dacha with forest plot in Aprelevka (which can be translated into English as "April village") not far from Moscow. Photo set I own shows small family gathering in early May. Most of Russian and Soviet people spend May holidays in the countryside and open so-called dacha season on 1st of May. Very often it is quite cold, especially inside of wooden summer house. Picture shows little girl Alyona (Nadya's grand daughter) watching telly. "Little steamer from Romashkovo" is absolute Soviet classics. This cartoon dates back to 1967. Why does this steamer looks so much like Thomas? I have no idea...

Another shoot taken the same time shows aunt Nadya in veranda's window

As for me, the most touching detail of this picture is Alyona's garden swing left for its winter's sleep under the telly.

  1. The aunt looking through the window almost looks like another TV screen.

  2. Aunt Nadya's face in the window looks kind of eerie, but the pictures are great.

  3. The pictures are very interesting. I think the high contrast does make them look kind of eerie.

  4. What an interesting old tv set. There is lots more box than screen.

  5. photos remind me of the summer house where I spent nearly 65 years of vacations and holidays. Summer houses can be quite cold any time, except for a few short weeks in mid-summer. I wish I had had the term "winter sleep" for our summer things that were stored inside and underfoot. Thanks for a great post. Also like the telly. Doesn't it seem that televisions seem much larger in a summer house -- like they take up space that's not theirs.

  6. Thanks for explaining about the swing, since I wouldn't have known what it was otherwise. Very interesting blog! The photo of tiny little one next to aunt in the window really shows how small she was!

  7. Alyona is all bundled up, isn't she? So, yes, chilly in the summer house! Love the shot of her looking at Nadya through the window!

  8. Wonderful - another world - a glimpse of Soviet life that we in the US typically didn't have access to back in '68.
